Anorexia and Substance Abuse

SUBSTANCE ABUSE occurs in (12-18%) of Anorexics. However, most Anorexic patients with a Substance Abuse problem are in the Binging/Purging subtype not the Restricting subtype.

IF A PERSON WITH BULIMIA OR BINGE EATING DISORDER HAS A SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM OR IS IN A SEVERE DEPRESSION, THESE ISSUES WILL MOST LIKELY INTERFERE WITH THE RECOVERY FROM THE EATING DISORDER. THEREFORE, IN MOST CASES, SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND SEVERE DEPRESSION SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BEFORE FOCUSING ON RESOLVING THE EATING DISORDER.
